1. Introduction

Welcome to Gifts!

Thanks for purchasing Gifts, the Gift List App for iPhone and iPod Touch!

If you have questions, problems, comments or recommendations, please contact us as follows:

Protecting your data!

We STRONGLY recommend that you periodically backup of your data! Although iTunes backs up your data every time you sync, restoring from an iTunes backup is no fun as it restores the entire device, and requires music to be resynced.

Gifts Backups are quick:
1) Tap the "i" button
2) Tap "Backup and Restore"
3) Tap "Email Backup file" (Or Backup to File)
4) Send the email backup to an email address that is accessible on your device, and where it won't accidentally get deleted!


How to Use this Guide

The rest of the Introduction discusses the basic architecture of the app. Section two is the Quick Start Guide, which is very dense, but should get you up to speed quickly. If you're going to read anything, read the Quick Start.

The rest of the guide discusses how to perform individual functions in the app. It's meant as a searchable reference rather than bed time reading material. An FAQ section is also available at the bottom of the guide.

Overview

Gifts has three main types of objects:
the List, Items, and Dictionaries.

The List holds items and is what you see when you first launch the app.

Each item on the gift list is a combination of a person, a gift idea, and an occasion. Not all fields have to be populated, and a single person can have multiple items on the list if you're planning to buy them more than one thing. You can add items to a list, delete them, edit them, check them off, or email them.

Dictionaries are used to remember things that you've entered into the app before. This includes entire items, and individual field values. Whenever there is a list that you can pick a value from, a dictionary is in use.

How to use Gifts

There are several ways you can use Gifts:
1) Idea Capture: Add Gift ideas for someone special to the list when you think of them. Enter the idea and the person it's for. This way when their birthday rolls around, you'll have some great ideas. You can also keep gifts you'd like to ask for in the future by entering your own name. This is useful if your family asks you for a list of things you might like for your birthday or other occasions.

2) Gift Log: when you buy a gift for someone, check it off your list. You can hide the checked off items, but keep them on the list so you can remember what you got little Susie or Johnny last year so you don't repeat by accident.

3) Shopping: Tap the purple arrows button. Select Group by Store. This will organize your list for shopping so you don't forget things when you're at a particular store. note that you need to enter a store with each item if you want to use the list in this way.

4) Gift Reminder: You can set up a recurring item for a person: Tap the "i" button, tap Scheduled items, enter the Occasion (such as Birthday), the date, and set the event to repeat each year. Leave the Gift Idea blank. Set the Days in advance on the schedule to "30". This way, a month before the birthday Gifts adds a "Need Gift Idea" to the list for that person. Checking Gifts periodically will remind you to think of something to get.


2. Quick Start

List View

List View shows you an overview of the items that are on a particular list.

A) Tap the Title of the List to search for an item
B) Items are usually grouped together under a "Group Header" by common properties such as store, section, or category. Tap the Text in the Group Header to just see the items under that group. (This also reveals subsequent grouping in the view. )
C) Tap the left most button on the group header to hide all items in that group.
D) While not in edit mode, each item has status indicator to the left of it which when tapped toggles the item between checked and unchecked.
E) Swiping an item will ask if you want to delete the item.
F) By Default, while not in edit mode, tapping the item anywhere but the checked indicator will switch to Detail View which show all fields for the items, and lets you edit their values.





List View Toolbar

List View usually has a Toolbar at the top to perform various functions:
A) Tap the left-most button (Filter Button) to hide and unhide checked items.
B) Tap the Green Plus button to add new items to the list.
C) Tap the Purple Eye button to group or sort the items on your list differently.
D) Tap the Blue Action button to Uncheck All items, Email items, or Add items from the Dictionary.
E) The "i" button opens the settings screen which controls list behavior, cost totaling, how items look, and lets you add and remove Stores, Categories, Units, and other dictionary items.



List View (Edit Mode)

When you tap the Edit button in List View, both items and the toolbar changes to allow different functions:
A) Tap the button to the left of the item to select or unselect it for deletion, editing or some other action.
B) Tap the Green "Edit Multiple" Button to set the value of an item field for all selected items.
C) Tap the Red Trash Can Button to delete all selected items.
D) Tap the Blue Action button to email just the selected items.
E) Tap the right-most button on the toolbar to select or unselect all visible items.
F) Tap the button on the right of the group header in order to reorder the groups.
G) Press and hold an item by the move handle to drag to a different group, or manually order the list.
H) By default you can also just tap the item to select or unselect it, though this behavior can be modified in Settings.

Item Detail Views (Add & Edit)

An Item Detail View appears whenever you tap the Green Plus Button in List View to add items, or when you tap on an item in List View to edit items.

A) The Add screen provides a Cancel Button, an Add Another Button (the plus button) and a Done Button.
B) The Edit Screen provides a Back Button, and Buttons to scroll between items.

Both Add and Edit Screens shows you all available fields for an item and their current values.
C) Tap a row to Edit the Value
D) A Value Editor will be displayed in the bottom half of the screen
E) Directly above the Editor is the Editor Toolbar. (Discussed Next)


Editor Toolbar Buttons

The Editor Toolbar appears whenever you are editing a value in the app. It allows you to:
A) Start Editing the previous or the next field.
B) Editor Buttons appear when more than one input method is available for a particular field. This is useful when you want to add a new value which is not in the pick list, or if you would prefer to type the first few letters of the value rather than scrolling through the list.
C) The Triangle Button stops editing.

Area D shows the correspondence between editor buttons and the type of editor. See the item Detail section for more discussion of the different editors.

3. List View

Adding Items to a List

To add a new item to the list:
1) Tap the green + button while viewing the list to open the Add screen.
2) Type the Item name. (optional)
3) Tap any other fields you want to set for the item (Person, or Store for example)
4) Tap the Done button to save the item, or the + button to save the item and enter another.

For more information On the Add item Screen see the Item Detail View section.

Any new values you type in will be saved to the dictionary by default, so the next time you add the item, you won't have to type the entire item.

Deleting Items

1) Swipe the item left to right.
2)Then tap the delete confirmation.

OR:

1)Tap the Edit Button
2) Select the items you want to delete by tapping the round circle to the left of the item
3) Tap the Red Trash Can Button.

Checking and Unchecking

When not in Edit mode, the button to the left of an item Shows you if the item is Unchecked (A) or Checked (B).

Tap the Button to toggle the item to the other state.

Note that optionally Checked items also contain a line through them. You can disable this in Settings.


Hiding Checked Items

The left most button on the toolbar is the Checked Filter Button.
Tapping this button toggles from showing all items (A) , to showing just unchecked items (B) , to showing only checked items (C), and then back to showing all items.

It also shows the number of items currently visible, and the total items on the list in a red badge.
The badge can be disabled on the Settings screen.

Removing Checked Items

As you check off items, they're still on your list, even if they're not visible. You can delete all the checked items if it was a onetime list, or uncheck them all if you always get people the same gift.
1) Tap the Blue Action Button.
2) Tap "Remove Checked Items."
3) Pick "Delete Checked Items" to remove the checked off items on the list or "Uncheck Items" to keep the items and uncheck them.


Group Filtering

You can use groups in order to filter the list:
To filter on a group
1) Tap on the text group header in List View.
To return to the full list,
2) Tap on the Button which appears at the top left of the window.

Filtering by a group is particularly useful when you only want to see items for a particular store in the gift list. By Default the list is grouped by Person. To Change this, tap the purple arrows button and pick a different view (such as Group by Store)

Collapse and Expand a Groups

To collapse a group and hide the items under it:
1) Tap the Triangular Button on on the left of the group header.
To expand a collapsed group and show the items again:
2) Tap the button again.

You can also Press and Hold any Group expansion button and you will be prompted to expand or collapse all groups.

Manually Organizing Items

If the current view you're using does not sort items automatically, then it's possible to order them manually:

1) Tap the edit button in list view.
2) Drag rows around by the handle which appears to the right of the item.

Note that if you drag an item to another Group, it will set the item's value for the grouping field.

Manual orderings are specific to the a particular view.

Emailing Visible Items

To email the items on the list screen
1) Tap the Blue Action Button.
2) Tap "Email Visible Items"
3) Tap "Easily Readable" to just format the fields you see in the list view in the email. Alternately, tapping "Spreadsheet" formats all fields in the email text as one large table.
4) Enter where you want to the email the list.
5) Press Send.

A link which allows the receiver to import the items into another copy of Gifts or Listomni is also included in the mail.

Note that hidden items are not sent.


Selecting Items

While in Edit Mode in List View, you can select multiple items for various operations.
To toggle an item's selection property
A) Tap the Circle Button to the left of the button. When it's red, the item is selected.
B) By Default you can actually tap anywhere on the row to select the item, however this is Settings dependent.

Alternately:
C) Tap the rightmost toolbar button to Select or Deselect all visible items.

Note that if you filter by a group, and select all items, you will only select the items in that group, which can be useful from time to time.

Emailing Selected Items

You can email just a few items from the list as follows:
1) Tap Edit
2) Use the buttons to the left of items to select them.
3) Tap the Blue Action Button.
4) Tap Email Items.
5) Pick the type of email ("Spreadsheet" includes all fields in the the email, "Easily Readable" only includes fields you currently see in List View, and group headers, though all fields are included in the import link.)
6) Enter an email address
7) Tap Send

This will open a mail screen with the items formatted in the mail, and a reimport link which can be clicked on the target device to reimport the items into a Gifts or Listomni.

This is useful if you want to keep a list of things you want to ask for in the app, and then send it out to relatives.

Editing Multiple Items

You can edit fields for more than one item at a time.
1) Tap Edit.
2) Select some items using the buttons to the left of items.
3) Tap the Green Edit button.
4) Tap the field you want to set the value for.
5) Set a Value for the Field.
6) Tap the Apply.

Note that the Green Edit Button is only enabled when at lease two items are selected.

You can select all visible items for editing by using the right most button on the toolbar (A)

Searching for Items

To search for an item in the list:
1) Tap the magnifying glass after the list title.
2) Type what you're looking for. (Fields which are searchable depends on the current list type.)

You can interact with items in the search result just as you would when there isn't a search:
A) Delete them.
B) Check them off
C) Open the Item in Item Details

3) Tap the cancel button to clear the search and return to viewing all items on the list. Canceling also zooms to the first item in the list which matched your search criteria.


4. Item Detail View

Item Details Overview

The Item Detail View lets you see all fields for an item, and to edit those fields' values.

To open an item in Item Details:
A) Tap the item in list view while not in edit mode.
B) If you've changed the default row tap behavior in Settings, then you may have to instead tap the Detail button to open an item in Item Details.

Once in Item Details View, you can use the arrows at the top right of the screen (C) to switch between items which were visible in list view.

D) The Toolbar in Item Details can be used to add new items without leaving detail mode, delete the current item, or to move or email the current item.

E) Occasionally fields will have a light gray arrow button next to them. Tap the button to perform a external action, such as Searching for the value in Google or Maps, dialing a phone number, or composing an email to an email address. The function is dependent on the field.

Editing in Item Details

To Edit a field's value in item Details:
1) Tap the field
2) Use the Editor which pops up to set the field's value.

A) Tap the Next or Back button to edit the Next or previous field for this item.
B) Tap an Arrow at the top of the screen to edit the same field for the next or previous item.
C) If available, the grey X button next to a value lets you clear the value out.
D) Tap the Upside triangle button to stop editing and stay on the details screen.

The item is saved when you return to list view or view a different item.

Item Dictionary Fields

The First Field in Item Details View is the Item Dictionary Field.

1) As you start to type, the Item Dictionary Field will recommend items from the Items dictionary which match what you've types so far.

2) Tap an Item in the recommended list to accept it and to autofill any dictionary fields such as Store(C) which were saved in the dictionary.

A) You can also tap the Browse Dictionary button to open the item Dictionary in full screen mode.
B) Tapping an item in the Browse Dictionary window accepts it and autofills any associated dictionary fields.

Person/Contact Fields

The Person/Contact Field lets you track someone who is related to the gift idea.

A) Use the Address Book button to link the item to a Contact from the iPhone Address Book.
B) When an item is linked to a contact, a grey head button appears next to the value. Tapping on this button will open the contact without leaving the application, from where you can initiate a Phone Call, or an email.

C) Instead of linking to the address book, you can also just type a value into this field or pick from the internal app Dictionary. It works just like any other dictionary. (The People Dictionary and isn't related to the iPhone's Contacts. ) This is useful because sometimes you don't want to add a full contact for a niece or nephew that isn't old enough to have a cellphone.


Other Dictionary Fields

When entering or editing an item in Item Detail Views, Store and Occasion fields are linked with a Dictionary behind the scenes. For these fields, you have the option of:
A) Picking a Value from the list.

B) Typing the Value (This will search the list of possible values or let you type a new value which wasn't in the dictionary yet.)

C) Browsing the Dictionary in full screen mode.
1) Tapping an item in the Browse Dictionary window picks the value
2) You can tap the Green Plus Button to add a new item to the dictionary (such as a store or category.)
3) You can delete items you don't want in the list.

Comment Field

The Comment Field expands based on the amount of text which is entered into it (A). It can be used for whatever extra information there wasn't a field for.

The Comment field additionally attempts to Auto Detect Phone numbers (B), Email addresses(C), and URLs (D) for it's external action which lets you quickly jump to the phone app, the mail app or Safari.
The value must be the only content of the comment field for this detection to work properly. If no value can be detected, then the option to search for the entire comment field contents in a search engine is given (E).

Dates and Times

There are several editors available to set the time and Date related to a Gift idea...
A) The Calendar Picker
B) The Date Picker
C) The Time Picker

Additionally, the All Day button (D) toggles the date between just having the date, and showing a specific time on the date. (Note the the All Day option is mutually exclusive with the Time Picker.

Flags

The "Flags" field consolidates a few Yes No flags for an item such as Checked / Not Checked, Important / Not Important

A) Tap on a Flag button to toggle the flag.
B) For an explanation of each Flag button tap anywhere on the field except for a button.
C) Flags can be used to change the color of the item in Item Details, and in List View. More information can be found on this under the Settings, then Item Layout and Colors.

Scheduling Repeating Items

You can Schedule an item to be added to the list in the future, or on a recurring basis.

1) Tap the Schedule field when Entering a new item or when Editing an existing one.
2) Select the type of schedule, how often it repeats, and the End Date ( if applicable.)

A) The Occurs Section will show you when the item will first be added to the list, when it was last added, and when it will next be added.

B) The Action section allows you to specify the behavior if a duplicate item is already on the list when the schedule runs.

Once you've scheduled an item, it's added to the list of Scheduled Items in the Settings Screen. You can delete or check the item off the list like you normally would without deleting the schedule. When the schedule runs, the item will be added to the list again, or unchecked if it's already present. Also see the "Scheduled Items" section in "Settings" to change how updates, deletes, and alerts relating to scheduled items are handled.


5. Settings

The Settings Screen

A) The Settings screen lets you add stores, occasions and people, modify the rotation behavior and timeout behavior of the screen, if and how items are counted and displayed on the iPhone Home screen. Additionally, you can change the default behavior when you tap on a list item, or how items look in the list.

The Settings Screen also lets you run a backup, set a passcode on the app, contact support, or, of course, find this manual.

To access the Settings Screen while viewing the list:
1) Tap the "i" button.



Backing Up Data

To create a backup of all you lists, and dictionaries:
1) Tap on the "i" button to open the settings screen.
2) Tap "Backup and Restore" Item

To Email the Backup to yourself
A)Tap "Email Backup File"
4)Tap "Send" after filling in the email form information

To instead save the backup file for transfer to your computer:
B) Tap "Save File Backup"
4) Connect your device to your Computer, Launch iTunes, and click on the device in the left hand window.
5) Click on the "Apps Tab"
6) At the bottom of the right hand window in the "File Sharing" section, click "Gifts"
7) Select the Backup File with the correct Date and drag it to a safe location. (The backup will also remain on your phone unless you delete it, but it's safest to store it separately on your computer in case the Application is accidentally deleted.

Note that on iPhone OS 3.1 and earlier, file attachments are not supported. Instead the backup is encoded in a link. These link can be truncated by Outlook and other mail programs if forwarded. Use the "Recoverable Backup" option (iPhone OS 3.1 Only) to ensure you can reconstruct the backup later. If you have problems with a backup, please contact support@ontomni.com


Combo Lock

You can add a Four Digit combination lock to your list to protect you gift list from prying eyes.
1) Tap "i" button to open the settings screen.
2) Locate and Tap the "Combo Lock" item.
3) You will be prompted to enter your combination
4) You will be prompted to confirm the combination.

This will open the Combination Options screen discussed in the next help item.

The is no way Ontomni support can circumvent the pass code, so don't forget it!

Note that If a combination is set, the Backup, and Combo Lock functions require the combination to be entered before running a backup, or changing the combination.

Combo Lock Options

Options available on the Combination Lock Page are:

A) Disable the Combination
B) Change the Combination
C) When the Application should require the pass code. (Protects the entire App)

After four unsuccessful attempts at the combination, the app quits, and only one attempt is allowed on app relaunch, until the correct code is received. If you're more concerned than this about security, please consider pass coding your entire device instead, as otherwise, anyone could delete the app.

Configuring Occasions, Stores and People

You can add and remove Stores, Occasions, and People, and other dictionary objects for the list by:
1) Tapping the "i" button while viewing the list to access the Settings screen.
2) Tap the Dictionary you want to add or remove values to in the Item Entry Section.
A) Tap The Green Plus Button to Add an Item.
B) Swipe the Item and tap Delete to delete an Item.


Customizing Auto Add Behavior

By Default, Gifts adds new values you type for people or occasions to the dictionary.

To change disable this behavior navigate to the List.
1) Tap the i Button to show the Settings Screen.
2) Tap the Dictionary you want to change the behavior for.
3) Tap the "i" Button for the Dictionary
4) Tap the Mode row and set the desired value.


Locking Interface Orientation

You can prevent the interface from rotating when you turn the phone by setting the "Screen Rotation" mode to "Lock Portrait" on the Settings screen.

1) Tap the "i" button to open the Settings screen
2) "Screen Rotation under the "Screen Settings" Section. Auto is the default behavior.

Note that currently, you must rotate the device to the desired orientation once after setting this value before the lock will stick.

Disabling Screen Timeout

Normally, the Device will time out and Autolock itself when not touched for some time. (A) This can be annoying when shopping when you keep having to unlock the phone.

You can disable the screen from autolocking while you're using the app as follows:
1) Tap the "i" button to open the Settings Screen
2) Tap the "Screen Timeout" Item.
3) Select Disable.


App Badge Count

You can change the Number badge which appears on the iPhone home screen over Gifts icon. (A)

It can be set to display the total number of items on the list, the number of unchecked items on the list, or it can be hidden altogether by selecting "None."

1) Tap on the "i" button to show the Settings screen.
2) Tap the App Icon Badge row
3) Set the desired behavior.


Hiding Toolbar Counts

By Default the Filter Button(A) on the toolbar shows you how many items are on the list, how many are visible, and how many are hidden. To disable this numeric readout:

1) Tap the "i" button to open the Settings Screen.
2) Set the On Off switch to Off for the row "Filter Badge"


Appearance Settings

The settings screen also allows you to change several items which are related to how items are displayed in List View

A) The list title which appears on the list header.

B) Cross Off Items - When enabled checked off items on lists also have a line strike through them, otherwise they're just grayed out.

C) Shrink List Text to Fit - In List View fields shrink significantly to fit as much text on each row as possible. This can be disabled by toggling the On Off switch for this setting, as it can be distracting for lists which have lots of moderate length strings.

Item Layout and Colors

Also under the Appearance section of the settings screen are Item Layout and Color settings for the app.

An "Item Layout" controls :
A) Which item fields are displayed in list view, and if there are only two fields displayed, if items are reduced in height.
B) If the checkoff button is visible
C) The default row, list, and button color. An Item layout also controls under what conditions a row or check off button will change color.

Gifts comes with four different Item Layouts by default, the standard and a condensed row layout.

To change the default item layout for the list:
1) Tap the "i" button on the list to open List Options.
2) Find and Tap on the "Item Layout and Colors" Row in the "Appearance" section.
3) Tap on the desired Item Layout from the list and exit back to the list.

(Each Layout offers a representation of what it will look like, and also will animate the color's it each row may take on depending on different item field values. )


Customizing Item Layouts

If there isn't a default Item Layout which suits your needs you can create a new Item Layout and specify which fields appear, if the check off button is hidden, and the color rules which affect the item.

From List View:
1) Tap the "i" Button.
2) Tap "Item Layout and Colors"
3) Tap Edit.
4) Tap the "Tap To Add Layout" row to create a new layout or tap an existing the Layout you'd like to modify.

A) A sample row is displayed at the top, so you can see how your changes will affect what each item will look like in List View.
B)Set each of four cell positions to show a different item field.
C) If you leave the Lower field positions blank, then you also have the option of Shrinking the Over All cell height to fit more items on the screen in list view.

Row color schemes are discussed on the next Help Item.

Customizing Item Colors

An Item Layout also controls:

A) If the Toggle Button Appears and the Default Button Color
B) If the Toggle button changes color based on an item field: (Have Coupon, Checked, On Sale).
C) The List Row color.
D) If the Row changes color based on an item field.

Row Tap Behavior

By Default, while viewing the list, tapping an item opens it in Item Detail View (A).
This behavior can be modified to do nothing, or to Toggle the item's checked flag instead (B) .

The latter two settings also causes an Item Detail button to appear on each item which will open Item Details if tapped. (C))

To Change this setting:
1) Tap the "i" button to open the "Settings screen"
2) Tap the "Row Tap" row under "Row Tap Behavior" and Select a new Value.

Edit Row Tap Behavior

By Default, while in edit mode on list, tapping an item toggles the item selection flag (A)
This behavior can be modified to open the item in Item Details(B), or to Edit the Item in Place(C), or to not perform any action.

The latter setting also causes an Item Detail button to appear on each item in this mode.

To change this setting:
1) Tap the "i" button to open the settings screen. on the Settings screen:
2) Tap the "Edit Row Tap" row under "Row Tap Behavior" and Select a new Value.

Item Entry Settings

Also on the Settings Screen are controls which impact the apps behavior when typing text:
A) The Auto-Correction row in the Settings Screen controls whether or not Gifts uses the device's keyboard correction.

B) The "Auto-Caps Mode" row in the Settings Screen controls when the iPhone keyboard automatically selects the "Shift" key on the iPhone Keyboard.

The options are Title Case, Sentence Case, or No Auto Capitalization. This setting only impacts text fields other than the comment fields.

C) The "Duplicate Items" row controls application behavior when you add an item to the list which is already present. By Default, this prompts you to ask how to deal with the duplicates. Other possibilities are: "Merge / Uncheck", "Add Duplicates" and "Replace Existing"


Default Field Values

When adding new items to the list, you can set the default values which are used for certain fields.
1) Open the Settings screen by tapping the "i" button on the list.
2) Tap the Item Default row at the bottom of the Item Entry section.
3) Tap the field you want to change the default value for.

You can set a fixed value, or set it to always use the last value entered for the field.

Currently Scheduled Items

The Scheduled Items row on the Settings Screen lets you see, add to, delete, or modify all the Items which are scheduled to be added to the list at some time in the future, regardless of if they have an instance on the list at that time.

1) Tap the "i" Button to open the Settings screen
2) Tap "Scheduled Items" in the Scheduled Items section.

Tap the Blue Detail button to edit a scheduled item.
Tap the Green Plus button to add a new scheduled item.
Select an item and tap the Red Trashcan to delete the item.

Look here to get rid of scheduled items when you're done with them, even if they're not on your list at the moment.

Scheduled Item Settings

Additional Settings which control the behavior of items you schedule are pictured below:

A) "Alert When Adding Items" row specifies if an alert is displayed whenever the scheduler adds a recurring item to the list, or updates one on the list. This can be used as an impromptu notification

B) "On Item Delete" Lets you specify what happens to an Item Schedule when you delete an item with that schedule from the list. you can instruct the app "Don't Delete the Schedule", " Delete the Schedule", or "Ask Me" Deleting the schedule will stop the item from appearing.

C) "On Item Edit" Lets you specify what happens to an Item Schedule when you edit an item with that schedule from the list. You can instruct the app "Update the Schedule", "Don't Update the Schedule", or "Ask Me." This controls if future items added to the list reflect your changes.


6. Grouping and Sorting

Changing Views

Gifts comes with several built in ways to group and order items on your list. These are called views. Views can also override the list's default layout of fields and the color rules for items.

To change between views:
1) Tap the purple Sorting and Grouping button.
2) Tap the view you want to use.

Note that you can modify the views (say...to sort alphabetically, or group by a different property) if the standard views don't do quite what you want.

Ordering Groups and Sections

To reorder grouping sections from List View:
1) Tap Edit.
2) Tap any round reorder handle on the right hand side of any Group Header.

A) The first area lets you setup sorting behavior for the group sections based on a dictionary view, the section's natural order (alphabetic or chronological), and specify where items that don't have a value set for the grouping field end up.

B) The second area shows you how the Groups will be ordered.

C) To manually order the group headers at any time Press and Drag the rows to the order you want using the reorder handles on the right.

Note that this Ordering is specific to the current view, so if you create additional views, it is possible to order things like sections differently.


Managing Views

The Edit Views screen lets you create, modify and delete views. Views control how items are ordered and grouped together in List View. You can have several different views for a given list, or list type.

To Access the Edit Views Screen:
1) Tap the Views button in List View.
2) Tap Edit.

To Edit an existing View:
A) Tap the View

To Delete a View:
B) Tap the Delete Placard to the left of the item, then Delete.

To Add a New VIew
C) Tap on the "Tap To Add View" row.


View Options Explained

Views consist of a Name, an Optional Grouping Hierarchy, an optional set of properties to sort items by, and optionally, an custom cell layout.

A) The Grouping Hierarchy will consolidate items with the same value for a property under a Group Header which lists the Value.

B) If multiple properties are grouped, the second group in the list isn't visible in the list until you Filter by a value in the first group.

C) Automatic Sorting lets you order items on the list within each group. If no group hierarchy is defined, the entire list is sorted. If no sorts are specified, then you can manually order items while in List View.

D) If you optionally enable and set a different Item Layout than the list's default (See Item Layout under Settings), then when the view is in use, Field positions an row colors will follow the custom layout.

Sort and Group Options

A) When defining either a sort or a group, you must specify the list property to sort or group on.

B) When you add an Automatic Sort to a view, you can also specify the Sort Direction.

Groups are a bit more configurable and include options for:
C) Showing empty groups all the time, while editing or never.
D) Including items that don't have a value set when filtering on any group

These last two Group Options are explained in more detail the next two sections.

Shows Empty Groups

The "Shows Empty Groups" (A) setting if the View shows the Group Header for all possible values even if there isn't a visible item for the Group Value on the list. (B)

This is useful while editing because it lets you set list values on items such as Person or Occasion by dragging items to different headers by the Move Handle (C).
Similarly while not in Edit mode, you can "Open a Group" (Such as a specific Person) and then add items to it regardless as to whether there was a visible item in the group already.

Note that for Stores, or fields that have may values, this setting is not recommended.

Including Not Set Values when Filtering

When "Filtering Includes Not Set" (A) is enabled, tapping on a group header to filter the list (B) will include items that don't have a value set for the grouping property (C). This is useful for shopping when you don't care what particular store you plan to buy an item at. The item will still appear even when filtering by a specific Store value.


7. Miscellaneous

Restoring from an Email Backup

Forward the email with the .listbkup file to the device.
1) In the Mail app on the device, Press and HOLD on the .listbkup file in the email.
2) Tap "Open in Gifts"
3) You will be prompted to replace all data in the app with your backup.

Note that in backups sent from iPhone OS 3.1 and earlier, file attachments are not supported. Instead the backup is encoded in a link. Restoring from such a backup just involves clicking on the link in the Mail app on the device. These link can be truncated by Outlook and other mail programs if forwarded. Use the "Recoverable Backup" option (iPhone OS 3.1 Only) to ensure you can reconstruct the backup later. If you have problems with a backup, please contact support@ontomni.com

Restoring from a File Backup

First, get the file back onto the device from your computer:
1) Connect the device to your computer, Launch iTunes, click on the device in the left hand window
2) Click the "Apps" Tab in iTunes.
3) At the bottom of the window in the "File Sharing Section" click on "Gifts"
4) Click "Add..." and select the .listbkup file.
5) In Gifts, tap on the "i" button.
6) Tap on "Backup and Restore"
7) Click on the correct backup date at the bottom of the screen.
8) You will be prompted to replace all data in the app with your backup.

Importing Items

Regular emails from Gifts and Listomni contain a link that let you import the items on another device which is running Gifts or Listomni. This is useful when splitting shopping lists up at the store.

1) In the Mail app on the device, tap the link in the email.
2) This will Launch Gifts and prompt you to import that items. Tap Import Items.

Note you can also create a new list for the items by tapping the green plus button.

Tips

1) If you don't like the way the list is grouped, sorted, or which fields it displays in the list, change it! Purple Eye Button->Edit->Tap the view. (Search "Custom Views" in help)
2) To get back to the top of the list tap the iPhone Status Bar.
3) Hate the phone rotating the view while shopping? (Checkout the Settings screen to lock it.)

Gotchas

1) Renaming a field such as Store on the list, will not rename all occurrences of the store. Instead, tap the "i" button, tap on the Store row, then rename the store there. This will update all items in the dictionary, and the list.

Frequent Crashes

If you experience frequent crashes, try rebooting the device. If that doesn't resolve the issue, please send us an email. We do reply!


A. FAQ

Multiple Gifts Per Person

An Gift Item in Gifts Pro is the unique combination between a Gift, a Person, and optionally, an Occasion.

Consequently, to add multiple gifts for a person, just add another items and set the person field to that person.

Then while viewing the Gift List:
1) Tap the Purple View button.
2) Select "Group by Contact / Person"

Items are grouped by the person for which they are intended. (A)

Splashscreen

Many people have contacted us asking to disable the splash screen when the app first opens.

Currently there isn't a way to disable the splash screen, mainly because of the way that third part apps are launched by the iPhone OS:

There is about a second or two of application launch time which is all Apple overhead.       This is hidden in the built in applications such as Notepad, Mail and Safari, because Apple actually shows you a splash screen which was a screen shot from the application the last time it was closed.    (Try clicking around in notes or mail immediately after launching and you'll notice it doesn't respond for 1-2 seconds.)

 Apple doesn't currently enable this trick for 3rd party applications.    We can only have a static image which is displayed during this time (The splashscreen)   (It's either that or a black screen during this time) We will be looking to change this and appropriate Apple's little trick as soon as they open it up, as we agree that there is value of being able to see what's on the list right away even before you can interact with it.

Listomni crashes immediately after the Ontomni Splashscreen

Try installing any free application from the appStore. Occasionally this seems to jostle iPhone or iTouch out of a bad state.

No Update is showing up on the App Store

Verify that the version is not the latest already:

  1. Launch Listomni
  2. Click the Help & Extras tab
  3. Click Contact Ontomni
  4. The version is listed at the top of the screen
If the version is NOT 2.2.0, it may be because this issue can occur when multiple itunes Ids are in use in a single household.
  1. Open iTunes
  2. Try authenticating in iTunes as the ID that you purchased the app with.
  3. Click on Applications.
  4. Ensure the application appears in the window on the right. If not:
    • Connect the Device.
    • Right click (or ctrl-click) the device in the left hand pane of iTunes.
    • Select transfer purchases.
  5. Look for a link like "Download 1 updates" in the lower righthand corner.
  6. Download the update
  7. Sync the device.
